The cultural life of the Upper Housatonic Valley has produced a tradition that has attracted writers, artists, musicians, and actors decade after decade. Stories and legends abound about the writers themselves – all of which can be found in visits to those whose homes have been left to us as living places to visit and explore.

Authors Catharine Maria Sedgwick, Herman Melville, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edward Bellamy, and Edith Wharton are among the literary legends who called our region home.

Enjoy this virtual / driving tour of notable sites of the region’s literary heritage, made possible by our friends at the Berkshire County Historical Society at Arrowhead.

We have also curated a special ‘Melville Trail’ guide which gives a glimpse into places that figured into the life of Herman Melville.
