Cantilena Chamber Choir & Guest artists: Urban Choral Arts Society (from Baltimore, MD)
LENOX, MA. — The Cantilena Chamber Choir will present its annual Martin Luther King Concert with special tribute to Rep. Elijah Cummings at Trinity Church on Sunday, January 19, at 3p.m. Special guests include a return appearance by the Urban Choral Arts Society from Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. King will be remembered in a combined choir performance of Robert Ray’s Gospel Massand the choral music of composer Adolphus Hailstork. Members of the Baltimore Choir, several of whom were very well acquainted with the life and work of Rep. Cummings, will give a special tribute through personal testimonies.
The featured work on the program will be Robert Ray’s Gospel Mass. The work was premiered in 1978 at the University of Illinois. The Mass is Dr. Ray’s interpretation of two thousand years of liturgical tradition with the more contemporary music of the African-American Church. Also on the program are works by Adolphus Hailstork, professor of composition at Old Dominion University whose numerous works have been premiered by the New York Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and Chicago’s leading choral ensemble VocalEssence.
