What is Poetry Slam? Poetry Slam is built on the idea of poetry as oral art form; that everyone should have access to the creative experience; and that everyone’s opinion about what makes a “good” poem is equally valid. The “slam” part comes from the element of “competition.” While many academics frown on the idea of competition in the context of any art, participants know that the competition is just a way to keep things lively. As we say, the point is not the points, the point is the poetry. Poetry slam is enthusiastically embraced by youth and adults and is found around the world in classrooms, coffee shops, bars and even at regional and national festivals. Note: For this middle school workshop, we will spend time thinking and writing and performing our poems “slam-style,” but we will leave off the competition element.
Why do we do it? Because it’s fun. And because it engages youth in thinking, writing and communicating.
Poets ages 14-24 may register to compete in the poetry slam or read at the open mic. Pre-registration for free event is required. Slots are limited and will be reserved on a first come basis.
